Graph Paper

Print graph paper at the exact spacing you need: 1/4 inch, 5 mm, 1 cm or your own. Choose a square grid, dot grid or isometric paper, set the paper size and margins, and download a vector PDF or a PNG.

How many squares per inch is graph paper?

The common US size has 4 squares per inch, each square 1/4 inch (6.35 mm). Other sizes are 5 per inch (1/5 inch), 8 per inch (1/8 inch) and 10 per inch (1/10 inch). Metric paper uses 5 mm squares, about 5.1 per inch, or 1 cm squares, about 2.5 per inch.

The table shows what each spacing gives on a page, counted by this maker with 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) margins. The grid is made of whole squares and centered, so any leftover space is split evenly on both sides.

What size is 1/4 inch graph paper?

Each square is 1/4 inch, or 6.35 mm, wide and tall. On a US Letter page with half-inch margins that makes 30 x 40 squares, 1,200 in all. On A4 with the same margins it makes 29 x 42 squares, because 210 mm does not divide into a whole number of quarter inches.

How do I make graph paper?

Pick a type and a square size, then set the paper size and margins. The preview redraws as you change anything. Choose a color and line weight, add a heavier line every 5 or 10 squares if you want one, and press Download PDF. Print at 100 percent scale.

  1. Choose Square grid, Dot grid or Isometric.
  2. Pick a square size, or choose Custom and type your own.
  3. Set the paper size, orientation and margins.
  4. Add a heavier line every N squares and a name and date line if you want them.
  5. Press Download PDF for printing or Download PNG for a picture.

How do I print 1 cm graph paper?

Choose the 1 cm size, pick your paper, and print the PDF at 100 percent. On Letter with half-inch margins the grid is 19 x 25 squares, and on A4 it is 18 x 27. Add a heavier line every 5 squares to make 5 cm blocks, which makes measuring and plotting easier.

Always print at Actual size. If your print dialog offers Fit to page, turn it off: shrinking a page by 3 percent turns a 1 cm square into 9.7 mm. After printing, hold a ruler against the grid and check that 10 squares span 10 cm.

What is the difference between graph paper, grid paper and dot grid paper?

Graph paper, grid paper, squared paper and coordinate paper are names for the same ruled squares. Dot grid paper keeps only a dot at each crossing, which is lighter to look at and good for sketching and lettering. Isometric paper uses triangles instead of squares, for drawing three-dimensional shapes.

This maker draws all three from one page. A dot grid uses exactly the same positions as the square grid at that spacing, so a 1/4 inch dot page has 1271 dots on Letter, one at every crossing.

What is isometric graph paper?

Isometric paper is a grid of equilateral triangles, drawn with vertical lines and two sets of lines slanted at 30 degrees. In this maker the size you pick is the side of each triangle. At 1/4 inch on Letter it draws 35 vertical lines and 112 slanted lines, inside the margins.

Limits

  • Smallest spacing: 2 mm (about 0.08 inch).
  • Whole squares only: the grid fills the margins with whole squares and centers them, so one edge of the printed area may sit a few millimeters inside the margin.
  • One page layout: every page in a download is the same. For different pages, download them one by one and combine them with Merge PDF.
  • Printer margins: a printer cannot print to the very edge of the paper. Keep margins at 0.25 inch or more, and check your printer manual for its exact edge limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on downloads.

Is there a graph paper template for Word or Excel?

The download is a PDF and a PNG. For a Word document, insert the PNG as a picture and set it to the page size, or print the PDF and write on it.

Can I make a grid with a different spacing on each axis?

No. Squares are always square. Choose a custom size for any other square, or use a heavier line every N squares for larger blocks.

Are my settings saved?

Yes, in this browser only, so the next visit starts where you stopped. Press Reset to go back to the defaults.

Can I print more than one page?

Yes. Set Pages up to 100 and the PDF repeats the same sheet that many times.
