How do I convert PNG to JPG?
Press Choose PNG pictures, or drop or paste files onto the page, and check that Convert to reads JPG. Set the quality, pick a background color if your PNG has transparent areas, then press Convert to JPG and Download. Several pictures arrive together as a ZIP, and nothing is uploaded.
- Press Choose PNG pictures, drop files on the page, or paste a copied screenshot with Ctrl+V.
- Leave Convert to on JPG. Set the Quality and, for transparent PNG files, the Background for see-through areas.
- Optional: choose Scale by percent or Longest side in pixels to cut the file size further.
- Press Convert to JPG, then Download. The result list shows each file before and after.
The page reads each file by its first bytes, so a PNG saved with the wrong extension still opens. To go back the other way, use JPG to PNG, and for other formats the Image Converter. On a Mac, Preview does a single file too: Apple's guide to converting image file types in Preview uses File, Export and the Format menu.
Does converting PNG to JPG make the file smaller?
For photos, yes, by a lot. The 1280 x 854 test photo shrank 83 percent at quality 90. For screenshots, charts and logos the gain is small, since PNG already stores flat colors compactly. The test chart shrank only 8 percent, and at quality 95 it grew 4 percent.
| JPG quality | Photo size | Photo change | Photo error | Chart size | Chart change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 95 | 556 KB | -77% | 2.02 | 39 KB | +4% |
| 90 | 417 KB | -83% | 2.9 | 34 KB | -8% |
| 85 | 344 KB | -86% | 3.64 | 32 KB | -15% |
| 75 | 263 KB | -89% | 4.82 | 28 KB | -24% |
| 60 | 202 KB | -92% | 6.08 | 25 KB | -32% |
A PNG that was made by saving a 256-color image can already be small. When the test photo was reduced to a 256-color PNG it measured 645 KB, and a quality 90 JPG made from that was 433 KB, a gain of 33 percent instead of 83. Check the Before and After columns on the result screen before you replace the originals.
Why does my transparent PNG get a white background as a JPG?
JPG has no transparency channel, so every pixel needs a solid color. This tool fills see-through areas with white by default and lets you pick another color. A converter that skips the fill leaves the raw color stored under clear pixels, which is often black. Pick the color of the page the picture will sit on.
In our 400 x 400 test logo, 72 percent of the pixels were clear or partly see-through. Filled with white, the corner pixel became 255, 255, 255; filled with black it became 0, 0, 0. The soft shadow around the logo is the part to watch: its half see-through pixels blend into the fill color, so on a different page color the shadow shows as a faint gray or white halo. The logo went from 21 KB as PNG to 9.1 KB as JPG on white.
If the picture must stay transparent, keep it as PNG, or convert it with WebP to PNG if it arrived as WebP. The Signature Generator makes transparent PNG signatures for the same reason.
What JPG quality should I use for a PNG?
Quality 90 keeps photos visually close to the PNG and cuts the file by about 83 percent. Go down to 75 when size matters more than detail. For an upload limit, aim at the number: the test photo needed quality 93 for 500 KB, 59 for 200 KB and 21 for 100 KB.
Those three figures come from searching every quality from 100 down for the highest one that stayed under each limit, on the full 1280 x 854 photo. A different picture gives different numbers, so use them as a guide and read the size in the result list. When even a low quality misses the limit, reduce the pixel size instead: halving both sides cuts the pixel count by three quarters. Try the Size option before you drop the quality below 60. For a PDF with a size limit, JPG to PDF has a target file size setting.
Will text and screenshots look worse as a JPG?
Slightly, yes. JPG blurs hard edges. On the test chart the average change was small, 0.76 levels at quality 90, but the largest single-pixel change reached 74 out of 255 beside edges and text. Keep screenshots, logos and diagrams as PNG when you need them crisp.
The photo shows the opposite: its largest change at quality 90 was 59, spread over detail the eye reads as texture. Lower qualities widen the gap on the chart, where the largest change grew from 73 at quality 95 to 106 at quality 60. If a form asks for JPG but your file is a screenshot of text, use quality 90 or higher and look at the result at full size.
Limits
- Lossy: the JPG is not a perfect copy of the PNG. Keep the PNG if you need the exact pixels later.
- Transparency: removed. See-through areas become the background color you pick.
- Camera details: EXIF data, including location, is not copied. The camera turn is applied to the pixels first.
- Color profiles: the browser converts to its standard sRGB screen colors, so a PNG with a wide-gamut profile may shift slightly.
- Very large pictures: anything over about 16 megapixels is scaled down to fit what phone browsers can draw. The longest side stops at 8,192 pixels.
- Test figures: sizes above come from a desktop encoder. Your browser's JPG encoder differs a little, so sizes on this page vary by a few percent.
Frequently asked questions
Is PNG to JPG conversion free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of pictures.
Are my PNG files uploaded?
No. Each picture is opened, redrawn and saved on your own device. The page has no upload step.
What quality should I choose?
The slider starts at 90, which suits general use. Lower it to shrink the file, and check the size column in the result list. The section on quality below lists the setting that fits common upload limits.
Can I convert many PNG files at once?
Yes. Add them all and they download together as one ZIP file, each also available alone from the result list.
Can I change the picture size at the same time?
Yes. Choose Scale by percent or Longest side in pixels before converting. Smaller pixel dimensions shrink the file much more than a lower quality does.
