How do I convert WebP to JPG?
Press Choose WebP pictures, or drop or paste files onto the page, and check that Convert to reads JPG. Set the quality, pick a background color if the WebP has transparent areas, then press Convert to JPG and Download. Several pictures arrive together as one ZIP, and nothing is uploaded.
- Press Choose WebP pictures, drop files on the page, or paste a copied picture with Ctrl+V.
- Leave Convert to on JPG. Keep Quality at 90 or higher, and set the background color if the picture has transparent areas.
- Press Convert to JPG, then Download. The result list shows each file before and after.
The page reads each file by its first bytes, so a WebP saved with a .jpg or .png extension is identified correctly and converts. For a transparent logo or sticker, use WebP to PNG. For other formats, use the Image Converter.
Why is my picture saved as WebP when I download it from a website?
The site chose WebP for your browser. A browser sends an Accept header listing the image types it can display, and a site that sees image/webp in it can answer with a WebP, which is smaller than the same picture as JPG. The file you save is then a WebP, even if the page looked like a JPG.
MDN's Accept header page shows a browser request that includes image/webp, and its content negotiation guide explains how a server picks the version to send. Google, which created the format, states that lossy WebP files are 25 to 34 percent smaller than comparable JPEGs at equal quality, which is the reason sites switch. Some sites also store WebP only, so every download is WebP. Dragging the picture to your desktop or using Save image as keeps whatever the server sent, and this page turns it into the JPG a form or program expects.
Will the JPG be bigger than the WebP?
Usually, yes. WebP compresses better than JPG, so a JPG that looks similar takes more space. The test photo was 226 KB as a quality 75 WebP and 406 KB as a quality 90 JPG, 1.8 times larger. Dropping the JPG to quality 75 brought it to 258 KB.
| WebP quality | WebP size | JPG quality | JPG size | JPG vs WebP size | Error vs WebP | Error vs original |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 90 | 371 KB | 90 | 410 KB | 1.1 times | 2.53 | 3.46 |
| 90 | 371 KB | 75 | 260 KB | 0.7 times | 4.51 | 5.13 |
| 75 | 226 KB | 90 | 406 KB | 1.8 times | 2.45 | 4.57 |
| 75 | 226 KB | 75 | 258 KB | 1.1 times | 4.45 | 5.77 |
| 50 | 175 KB | 90 | 400 KB | 2.3 times | 2.33 | 5.44 |
| 50 | 175 KB | 75 | 256 KB | 1.5 times | 4.34 | 6.38 |
A flat graphic widens the gap. The test chart was 6.7 KB as a quality 90 WebP and 36 KB as JPG, and 2.9 KB as a lossless WebP, so the lossless WebP of this chart was 12 times smaller than the JPG. If the JPG must stay under an upload limit, lower its quality or scale the pixels with the Size option; the PNG to JPG page lists the quality that fit common limits for a photo.
Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?
A little. A lossy WebP is already compressed, and the JPG compresses it a second time. At JPG quality 90 the added change was 2.53 levels out of 255 per color channel for the quality 90 WebP, hard to see, and 2.45 for the quality 75 one. A lossless WebP loses nothing until the JPG step.
Against the original photo, the quality 75 WebP measured 3.91 and the JPG made from it 4.57. Dropping the JPG to quality 75 raises the added change to 4.45. Keep the WebP as your master and make JPG copies when a program insists on them, instead of converting a JPG again later.
How do I convert WebP to JPG on Windows or Mac without software?
On a Mac, open the WebP in Preview if it opens, choose File, then Export, and pick JPEG from the Format menu, as Apple's Preview guide describes. On Windows, install Microsoft's free WebP Image Extension, open the file in an app that can save JPEG, and use Save as. Or convert it here with no install.
Apple's guide to converting image file types in Preview covers single files and several selected in the sidebar. Microsoft describes its WebP Image Extension as enabling Windows to decode WebP so File Explorer, Photos and other apps can show it. Which Windows apps then offer a JPEG save depends on your version, so check the Save as list. Either route handles one file at a time, while this page converts a folder-sized batch in one pass.
What happens to a transparent WebP when I save it as JPG?
WebP can hold transparency and JPG cannot, so see-through areas are filled with a solid color. The default is white, and you can choose any color before converting. Pick the color of the page the picture will sit on so soft edges blend in. To keep the transparency, convert to PNG instead.
In our 400 x 400 test logo, 72 percent of the pixels were clear or partly see-through, and the WebP kept 45,505 partly transparent pixels, such as a soft shadow. The WebP was 10 KB and the JPG on white 9.1 KB. The shadow turns gray against white and would look different on another color, which is why a sticker or logo is better as WebP to PNG. A WebP can also be animated; the converter saves its first frame.
Limits
- Browser support: the file must be one your browser can display. MDN lists WebP as supported in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari. An unreadable file is left out with a message.
- Animation: an animated WebP converts as its first frame.
- Lossy twice: the JPG adds a little error to the WebP. Quality 90 or higher keeps it small.
- Transparency: removed. See-through areas become the background color you pick.
- Camera details: metadata such as location is not copied.
- Very large pictures: anything over about 16 megapixels is scaled down to fit what phone browsers can draw. The longest side stops at 8,192 pixels.
- Test figures: sizes above come from a desktop encoder. Your browser's JPG encoder differs a little, so sizes on this page vary by a few percent.
Frequently asked questions
Is WebP to JPG conversion free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of pictures.
Are my WebP files uploaded?
No. Each picture is decoded and saved by your own browser. The page has no upload step.
Can I convert many WebP files at once?
Yes. Add them all and they download together as one ZIP file, each also available alone from the result list.
Why does the JPG have a white background?
JPG cannot be see-through, so transparent parts of a WebP are filled with a color. White is the default, and you can pick another color before converting. To keep the transparency, convert to PNG instead.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Choose WebP files from your photo library or files. A phone handles about 120 MB at once, so send very large batches in parts.
