How to electronically sign a PDF
Open the PDF here, press Signature, then draw your name, type it in a handwriting font or upload a photo of your handwritten signature. Click the page to place it, add initials and a date if needed, and save. The US ESIGN Act says a signature cannot be denied legal effect only because it is electronic.
- Draw it with a mouse, trackpad or finger.
- Type your name and the tool sets it in a handwriting font.
- Upload a picture of a signature you wrote on paper.
The signature, initials and date can be black, blue or red, and you can copy a placed signature to every page. Whether a document needs more than a picture of a signature depends on the document and the law that applies, as the legal section below explains. The guide Electronic vs Digital Signature shows what each kind proves, and the text of the law is on GovInfo.
How do I sign a Word document online for free?
Turn the Word file into a PDF first: open Word to PDF, choose the .docx and press Convert to PDF. Then choose that PDF here, place your signature, initials and date, and press Save signed PDF. Both steps run in your browser, so neither the document nor your signature is uploaded.
- Open Word to PDF, choose the .docx file and press Convert to PDF, then Download.
- Come back here, press Choose a PDF to sign and pick the new PDF.
- Press Signature, make it, and click the page where it goes. Add Initials, Date or Text the same way.
- Press Save signed PDF, then Download.
Word to PDF also reads .rtf and .odt files; an old .doc file needs saving as .docx in Word first, and the tool says so when it meets one. The signed copy stays a PDF. If the wording has to change later, edit the Word file, convert it again and sign the fresh copy.
How do I sign a PDF on a phone?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, choose the PDF from your files, press Signature and draw with your finger on the white box. Tap the page where the signature goes; drag it into place. The page works without installing an app or creating an account.
Is a signature added this way legally binding?
In the United States and elsewhere, a drawn or typed electronic signature can be valid, depending on the document and local law; the US ESIGN Act covers this. This tool adds a picture of your signature; it does not verify identity or keep an audit trail. For contracts that need those, use an e-signature service. General information, not legal advice.
Need the document itself first? The NDA template, the bill of sale maker and the offer letter template each print signature lines, so you can sign the PDF here afterwards. For a tamper-evident certificate signature, use Digital Signature PDF.
What happens to a PDF that is already digitally signed?
Rewriting a signed file would break its digital signature. Instead, this tool adds your changes as an update after the original, leaving every original byte in place, so readers can still check the earlier signature. In our build test, a signed file of 1.1 KB kept all of its original bytes unchanged after a signature was added.
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| Original signed file | 1.1 KB |
| After adding a signature | 2.4 KB, saved as an update |
| Original bytes unchanged | Yes |
Is it safe to sign a PDF online?
Signing sites that work on a server upload your document and signature to their servers. Here, both stay in your browser: the file is read on your device, the signature is drawn into it on your device, and the result downloads straight back. A remembered signature is kept in this browser's storage, which you can clear at any time.
Limits and fixes
- Not a certificate signature: the signature is a picture; it does not prove who signed or detect later changes.
- No sending for others to sign: this signs your own copy. Send the signed PDF by email yourself.
- Locked PDFs need their password removed first with Unlock PDF.
- Text in Chinese, Japanese or Korean cannot be saved yet; draw it instead with Signature, which works in any language.
