Photo Editor: Edit Images Free in Your Browser

Crop, rotate, straighten, flip, fix the perspective and resize a photo, then save it as JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. The editor runs on your own device, so your pictures are never uploaded.

How do I edit a photo online for free?

Press Choose a picture, or drop, paste or take one, and it opens in the editor. Pick a tool in the bar: Crop, Rotate, Flip, Straighten, Perspective or Resize. Each change shows at once and can be undone. Open Export to pick the format, then press Save picture and Download.

  1. Open a picture: Choose a picture, drop a file, paste with Ctrl+V or press Take a photo on a phone. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and iPhone HEIC open.
  2. Tap a tool in the bar. Crop takes a free box, a ratio or a circle; Rotate and Flip act at once; Straighten, Perspective and Resize show a preview until you press Apply.
  3. Chain as many edits as you like. Undo and Redo sit over the picture, and holding the eye button shows the original.
  4. Open Export, pick JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF and the quality, and tick a size limit if a form asks for one.
  5. Press Save picture, check the result, then Download, Copy picture or Keep editing.

The bar also holds Draw (pen, highlighter, shapes, arrows), Text, Privacy (blur, pixelate, redact) and Watermark (text or a logo, nine positions or a tile pattern). Drawings, text and watermarks are saved as shapes and letters, so the full-size file draws them sharp. Blur and pixelate overwrite the hidden pixels, so they cannot be undone from the saved file. These pages open on one job: Blur Image, Pixelate Image and Add Text to Image.

The bar also holds Document (finds the edges of a photographed page, flattens it, gives it a scanner look and saves a one-page PDF), Layout (a frame, rounded corners, or padding to a ratio such as 1:1, 4:5 or 9:16 with a color or a blurred copy of the picture behind it), Split (a grid of tiles in one ZIP) and Colors (HEX, RGB and HSL of any point, plus the main colors). Each has its own page: Image Splitter, Color Picker from Image, Rotate Image, Flip Image and Circle Crop. For a multi-page scan, Scan to PDF keeps the pages together.

Three tools run on your device with AI or patch filling, and your picture never leaves it. Background finds the subject with a small AI model, then makes the background see-through, a color, a blur or another picture. Upscale doubles the size with an AI model or enlarges 2x to 4x with Lanczos3. Eraser fills over a small object or blemish. Each has its own page: Remove Background, Blur Background, Upscale Image and Remove Object from Photo.

Other pages that need only one job opens the editor on that tool: Crop Image starts on Crop. To shrink a file for an upload form without other edits, Compress Image handles a batch at once, and Image Converter changes the format of many pictures together.

Are my photos uploaded when I edit them?

No. The page opens your picture with the browser's own image decoder, draws every edit on a canvas on your device and writes the new file there too. There is no upload step and no account, so a private photo never leaves your phone or computer. The only files the page fetches are its own scripts.

The editor keeps your original untouched and stores the edits as a list, such as "crop to this box, turn right, flip". The picture on screen is a copy at most 2,048 pixels on its longest side, so dragging a slider stays smooth. When you press Save picture, the list runs again on the full-size photo inside a background worker with an OffscreenCanvas, so the page does not freeze while a 12 megapixel photo is drawn; browsers without one draw on the page instead. Neighboring geometry edits merge into one drawing step: in our test, a 1:1 crop, a quarter turn and a flip on a 4032 x 3024 photo ran as 1 step and gave 3024 x 3024 pixels, so the photo is resampled once at most.

How do I straighten a crooked photo?

Open Straighten and drag the angle slider until the grid lines run along the horizon or a wall, or use the half-degree buttons. Auto-crop trims the picture to the largest rectangle with the same shape that has no empty corners. Press Apply to keep the angle. The slider covers 45 degrees each way.

What auto-crop keeps of a 4032 x 3024 photo at each angle, from the editor's own straighten formula
AngleSaved sizeArea kept
1 degrees3941 x 295695.5 percent
2 degrees3855 x 289191.4 percent
3 degrees3774 x 283087.6 percent
5 degrees3625 x 271880.8 percent
10 degrees3315 x 248667.6 percent
15 degrees3075 x 230758.2 percent

Turning a w x h picture by an angle leaves empty corners. The largest rectangle with the same proportions that fits inside has a scale of the smaller of w / (w cos + h sin) and h / (w sin + h cos), with the cosine and sine of the angle. Each degree costs a few percent of the area, which is why a small tilt is cheap to fix and a large one is not. Turn auto-crop off to keep the whole picture with empty corners, which save as see-through in PNG, WebP and AVIF or as the background color in JPG. A quarter turn is a separate tool, Rotate, and loses nothing.

How do I fix perspective in a photo?

Open Perspective and drag the four corner handles onto the corners of something that should be a rectangle, such as a painting, a sign, a screen or a building front. A magnifier shows the corner under your finger. Press Apply and the editor flattens that area into a straight-sided rectangle.

The flattening uses the same math as Scan to PDF: a homography, the projective transform that maps a flat rectangle onto the four corners seen in the photo, solved by the direct linear transform described by Hartley and Zisserman in Multiple View Geometry in Computer Vision. Every pixel of the new picture is looked up in the photo and blended from its four nearest neighbors. The new size is the average length of the opposite edges. For pages of a document, Scan to PDF also finds the edges for you and makes a PDF.

How do I undo edits or compare with the original?

Press the Undo arrow over the picture or Ctrl+Z, and Redo or Ctrl+Y to step forward again. Each applied edit is one step. Press and hold the eye button, or hold the Space key on it, to see the original photo; let go to return to your edits. Opening a new picture starts a fresh list.

Because the editor keeps the original and a list of edits, undoing never stacks up quality loss: the picture on screen is drawn again from the original each time. On a laptop, + and - zoom, 0 fits the picture, Ctrl and the mouse wheel zoom where the pointer is, and the arrow keys move the crop box or fine-tune the straighten angle.

What format should I save an edited photo in?

Save photos as JPG for the widest support and small files, PNG for screenshots, graphics or anything with a see-through background, and WebP or AVIF for smaller files on the web. The editor starts with the format you opened, offers only formats your browser can write, and switches to PNG after a circle crop.

JPG starts at quality 90, WebP at 85 and AVIF at 60, the same starting points as the Image Converter. A size limit runs the search from Resize Image: it lowers the quality step by step, and only if the lowest quality is still too big, it shrinks the pixels. The result screen shows the pixel size, the quality used and the file size before you download.

Limits

  • One picture at a time in this version. Batch jobs live in Resize Image, Compress Image and Image Converter.
  • Size: photos are held to 8,192 pixels on the longest side and 16 megapixels, which a phone browser can draw. Larger photos are scaled to fit before editing.
  • Zooming in past the 2,048 pixel preview copy looks soft on screen; the saved file uses the full-size photo.
  • Perspective fills see-through areas with solid color.
  • Camera details (EXIF, GPS) and color profiles are not copied into the saved file.

Frequently asked questions

Is the photo editor free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you edit.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Pinch to zoom, drag with two fingers to pan and double-tap to fit. The tool bar sits at the bottom of the screen.

Can I edit iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes. HEIC photos open, turned upright by their camera orientation, and save as JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF.

Will editing lower the quality of my photo?

Crops, quarter turns and flips keep every pixel as it was. Straightening, perspective and resizing blend pixels, and JPG, WebP and AVIF compress when saved. PNG keeps every saved pixel.

Can I add filters or text?

Not yet. This first version covers the shape of the picture: crop, rotate, straighten, flip, perspective and resize.
