- Press Convert to JPG.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows
Use our tool: choose the HEIC photos, pick a quality, and press Convert to JPG; the JPGs download without any Windows add-on. Windows can also open HEIC files once Microsoft's free HEIF Image Extensions are installed, but that only lets you view them; the JPG files still come from a converter such as this one.
- Open this page in Edge or Chrome and press Choose HEIC photos. Pick one photo or the whole batch.
- Choose the JPG quality and press Convert to JPG.
- Press Download. Several photos come as one ZIP; right-click it and choose Extract All.
Without our tool, Windows needs a codec first. Microsoft's page Photos app Video Editor error: Can't view this file type says to install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, then restart the Photos app. That lets Windows show the photos, but it does not turn them into JPG files. The tool above does that for a whole batch in one go.
How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac
Open the photo in Preview, choose File, then Export, pick JPEG from the Format menu, adjust the quality and click Save. To convert several photos at once, open them in one Preview window, select them in the sidebar and export together. Our tool does the same in any browser, with no app.
- Open the HEIC photo in Preview and choose File, then Export.
- Open the Format menu and pick JPEG. Adjust the quality setting if you want a smaller file.
- Name the file, choose a location and click Save.
Apple lists these steps in Convert image file types using Preview on Mac. For a folder of photos, Choose HEIC photos in the tool above takes them all at once and returns one ZIP.
Why won't my HEIC photos open on Windows or upload to a website?
HEIC is newer than JPG. Windows 10 needs an extra extension to open HEIC files, according to the Library of Congress, and upload forms often list only formats such as JPG, PNG or PDF. Converting to JPG fixes both, because JPG has been the standard photo format since its file format was set in 1992.
Our guide HEIC vs JPG explains the difference and shows which browsers can display each format.
Which JPG quality should I choose?
High (92%) keeps the photo looking the same and suits printing and editing. Standard (85%) is hard to tell apart on a screen and makes smaller files. Smaller (75%) suits sending many photos by email. In our test the same photo was 454 KB at High, 344 KB at Standard and 263 KB at Smaller.
| Setting | JPG size |
|---|---|
| The HEIC file | 701 KB |
| JPG at 92% | 454 KB |
| JPG at 85% | 344 KB |
| JPG at 75% | 263 KB |
Is a JPG the same as a JPEG?
Yes. JPG and JPEG name the same image format. The short .jpg extension dates from older Windows versions that allowed only three letters, and programs treat .jpg and .jpeg files alike. This tool saves each photo with the .jpg extension, so the files open wherever JPEG pictures do.
How do I stop my iPhone saving photos as HEIC?
Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG, while photos you already took stay HEIC. Apple notes that the High Efficiency setting saves space on the phone, so Most Compatible photos take more storage. Convert older HEIC photos with this tool when you need them as JPG.
Need the photos as a single document instead? HEIC to PDF puts them into one PDF, one photo per page.
Limits and fixes
- Live Photos and bursts convert to their main still picture.
- Very large photos over 16 megapixels are scaled down to fit what phone browsers can draw.
- Camera details such as date taken and location are left out of the JPG, which also keeps them private.
