How do I make a maze?

Pick a difficulty, set how many mazes you want and add a title. The generator draws each maze from a seed, marks START and FINISH, and builds a PDF with one maze per page. Turn on the answer key to get the solution routes on the pages after the mazes, then download the PDF or a PNG.

  1. Choose a difficulty, from Easy to Expert.
  2. Set the number of mazes, 1 to 50.
  3. Add a title, instructions and a name and date line.
  4. Press New mazes until the preview looks right.
  5. Download the PDF with the answer key.

How are mazes generated?

A program starts with a grid of closed squares and removes walls until every square connects to the rest with no loops. That leaves one route between any two squares. The method sets the feel: the recursive backtracker carves long winding corridors, while Prim and Kruskal leave shorter dead ends.

This generator uses all three. Each carves a spanning tree of the grid, so a maze of n squares has exactly n minus 1 openings between squares. A 10 x 10 maze has 100 squares and 99 openings. The tests in this tool check that count, check that every square can be reached, and check that the same seed always draws the same maze.

What makes a maze hard?

Size and branching. A bigger grid has more squares to search, and the recursive backtracker makes long corridors that wind through the grid before reaching the finish. Easy and Medium use small grids with short dead ends. Hard and Expert use large grids with long corridors, so a wrong turn costs more time.

The table shows what each level draws, averaged over 40 mazes from the generator itself.

Medium14 x 17238Kruskal18 percent29 percent
Hard22 x 28616Backtracker26 percent10 percent

You can also pick the method yourself under Corridors, which lets you print a small grid with long corridors or a large grid with short ones.

How do I make a maze for kids?

Turn on Kids mode. It cuts the grid to about 55 percent of the squares across and down, so the paths get wider, and it prints the walls at the thickest line weight. Start on Easy, then move up a level when the first maze feels quick. Keep the name and date line for classroom use.

Kids mode keeps your level, so Easy in Kids mode is the smallest maze the generator draws: 5 x 6 squares. Print several to give each child a different maze, then use the answer key pages to check them.

How do I solve a maze?

Put one hand on a wall and keep it there as you walk. In a maze where every wall joins the outer wall, this wall follower rule always reaches the exit. Every maze made here is of that kind, so the rule works on all of them,. The answer key shows the shortest route.

How do I make the same maze again?

Use its seed. The footer of each page prints the seed, the level and the grid size. Enter that seed with the same level, corridor setting and Kids mode, set the number of mazes to 1, and the same maze comes back wall for wall. Each maze in a batch has its own seed.

Limits

  • Rectangular grids only. There is no circular or hexagon maze yet.
  • Up to 50 mazes per PDF. Answer keys follow the mazes, four to a page.
  • Portrait pages. US Letter or A4, with a half inch margin.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many PDFs you make.

Does every maze have a solution?

Yes. Each maze has exactly one route from START to FINISH, and the answer key draws it.

Can I print several different mazes at once?

Yes. Set the number of mazes up to 50 and each one gets its own page and seed.

Can I change the line weight?

Yes. Pick thin, medium or thick. Kids mode uses the thickest weight.

Is a maze generator the same as a maze maker?

Yes. Both words mean a tool that draws a new maze for you, and this page does that.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Make the maze on a phone and print the PDF later.
