How to split PDF files
Choose your PDF, pick how to split it, and press Split PDF. For page ranges, type one range per file, separated by commas, such as 1-3, 4-8, 9-end; that makes three files. For equal parts, choose Every few pages and type how many pages each file should have. Several files come as one ZIP.
- Press Choose a PDF.
- Under How to split, choose page ranges, every few pages, chosen pages or odd and even pages.
- Type the ranges or number, or click pages. Colored thumbnails show which file each page goes into.
- Press Split PDF, then Download.
Which way to split
- By page ranges: you choose where each file starts and ends, such as one file per chapter.
- Every few pages: the tool cuts equal parts, and the last file holds whatever pages are left.
- Chosen pages: click the thumbnails to pull only those pages into one new file.
- Odd and even pages: two files, one with the odd pages and one with the even pages.
Several files download together as one ZIP, each named with its page numbers, and your PDF stays on your device the whole time. To cut pages out of the same file instead of making new ones, use Delete PDF Pages.
How do I extract pages from a PDF?
Click the pages you want; the tool switches to Extract chosen pages and highlights them. Press Split PDF and you get one new PDF with just those pages, in page order. The original file stays unchanged on your device, and extracting is free with no page cap. To remove pages instead, use Delete PDF Pages.
- Press Choose a PDF.
- Click each page you want to keep. Click a page again to take it out, or press Clear selection to start over.
- Press Split PDF, then Download. The new file is named after the original with -extracted at the end, such as report-extracted.pdf.
- A run of pages, such as pages 5 to 12: choose By page ranges and type 5-12. One range makes one file.
- Each chosen page as its own file: choose By page ranges and type the pages with commas, such as 2, 5, 9. Every comma starts a new file.
- Pages in a different order: extracted pages always keep their page order. To rearrange them, use Organize PDF.
- Everything except a few pages: Delete PDF Pages is quicker, because you click only the pages to remove.
Will the split files be bigger than the original?
Together they come to about the same as the original. Each file has to carry the fonts and images its own pages use, so shared parts can repeat across files. In our test the 4 files totaled 1.3 MB against 1.3 MB for the original.
| File | Size |
|---|---|
| Part 1 | 14 KB |
| Part 2 | 14 KB |
| Part 3 | 14 KB |
| Part 4 | 1.3 MB |
| All parts | 1.3 MB |
How do I split odd and even pages?
Choose Odd and even pages. You get two files: one with pages 1, 3, 5 and one with pages 2, 4, 6. This is handy for undoing a double-sided scan or printing both sides on a printer without duplex. To join them back in the right order later, use Merge PDF with Double-sided scan ticked.
Is there a free way to split a PDF without limits?
Yes. This tool has no daily limit, no page cap and no sign-up, because the work happens on your own device rather than on a server. Very long PDFs simply take a little longer. Some online splitters cap free use at a few tasks a day or a few hundred pages.
Limits and fixes
- Bookmarks are not kept in the split files.
- Splitting by file size or by chapter bookmarks is not available yet.
- Splitting one page in half (a scanned book spread) is a different job from splitting a file.
- Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
Frequently asked questions
How many files can I split a PDF into?
As many as you like. Every page can even become its own file: choose Every few pages and type 1.
How are the files named?
Each file is named after the original with its part number and pages, for example report-part-2-pages-4-8.pdf.
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied exactly, without compression.
Can I use "end" in a range?
Yes. Ranges like 9-end, and the words last, odd and even, are understood.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is split in your browser on your device.
