How do I convert AVIF to JPG?

Press Choose AVIF pictures, or drop or paste files onto the page, and check that Convert to reads JPG. Set the quality, pick a background color if the AVIF has transparent areas, then press Convert to JPG and Download. Several pictures arrive together as one ZIP, and nothing is uploaded.

  1. Press Choose AVIF pictures or drop the files on the page.
  2. Leave Convert to on JPG. Keep Quality at 90 or higher, and set the background color if the picture has transparent areas.
  3. Press Convert to JPG, then Download. The result list shows each file before and after.

The page reads each file by its first bytes, so a mislabeled file is still identified correctly. For other formats, use the Image Converter, and for pictures saved from websites as WebP, WebP to JPG.

Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF it came from?

AVIF compresses far better than JPG, so a JPG that looks the same takes more space. The test photo was 192 KB as AVIF at quality 60 and 388 KB as a quality 90 JPG, 2 times larger. A JPG at quality 75 came out 254 KB, closer to the original size but softer.

The 1280 x 854 test photo saved as AVIF at three qualities, then converted to JPG. "Error vs AVIF" is the average difference per color channel between the AVIF and the JPG (0 to 255). "Error vs original" is against the untouched photo. Measured 2026-10-18.

4086 KB90321 KB3.7 times1.837.57
4086 KB75216 KB2.5 times3.027.96

The gap is widest for the lowest-quality AVIF, which was 86 KB against 321 KB as JPG. A flat graphic shows it even more: our test chart was 3.1 KB as AVIF and 34 KB as JPG. If the JPG is for an upload form with a size limit, lower the JPG quality or scale the pixels down with the Size option. Converting does not repair an AVIF saved at a low quality either: the error against the original photo in the last column is the AVIF's own error plus a little more.

Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?

A little. Both formats are lossy, so the JPG is a second compression of a picture that was already compressed. At JPG quality 90 the extra change was 2.35 levels out of 255 per color channel for the quality 60 AVIF, and 2.71 for the quality 80 one, which is hard to see.

Against the original photo, the quality 80 AVIF measured 2.06 and the JPG made from it 3.33. At JPG quality 75 the added change grows to 4.66. Keep the AVIF as your master copy and make JPG files from it when a program needs them, rather than converting a JPG again later.

How do I open AVIF files on Windows?

Drag the file into a current browser such as Edge, Chrome or Firefox, which display AVIF. For apps such as Photos, Microsoft's free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store adds AV1 decoding to Windows, and AVIF uses AV1 compression. Or convert the file to JPG on this page and open the JPG anywhere.

AVIF stores a picture with the AV1 codec inside the HEIF container, as the AV1 Image File Format specification defines. Microsoft describes its AV1 Video Extension as a way to play AV1 videos in Windows apps. Whether a given app then shows AVIF pictures depends on your Windows and app versions, so test with one file before you rely on it. The converter on this page does not need the extension, because it uses your browser's own AVIF support.

Which browsers can open AVIF files?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari display AVIF, according to MDN Web Docs. The converter depends on that, since the browser decodes the file. If your browser is older or locked down and cannot show AVIF, the file is listed as one the tool could not open, and you can try another browser.

MDN also calls AVIF a good choice for web images because of its high performance and royalty-free format, and advises sites to offer a fallback in a format with wider support. A JPG is a natural fallback, and it is also the version a program or form built around older formats will accept. See the MDN image file type and format guide for the full table. Phones that save HEIC instead of AVIF are covered by HEIC to JPG.

What happens to a transparent AVIF when I save it as JPG?

AVIF can hold transparency and JPG cannot, so see-through areas are filled with a solid color. The default is white, and you can choose any color before converting. Pick the color of the page the picture will sit on so soft edges blend in. To keep the transparency, convert to PNG instead.

In our 400 x 400 test logo, 73 percent of the pixels were clear or partly see-through, and the AVIF kept those values: 48,034 pixels with partial transparency. The AVIF was 3.3 KB and the JPG on a white background 9.5 KB. For a transparent result, set Convert to PNG, or use PNG to JPG if you already have a PNG.

Limits

  • Browser support: the file must be one your browser can display. An unreadable AVIF is left out with a message.
  • Lossy twice: the JPG adds a little error to the AVIF. Quality 90 or higher keeps it small.
  • Color depth: the browser converts to standard sRGB screen colors, so 10-bit depth and HDR brightness are not kept.
  • Camera details: metadata such as location is not copied.
  • Very large pictures: anything over about 16 megapixels is scaled down to fit what phone browsers can draw. The longest side stops at 8,192 pixels.
  • Test figures: sizes above come from a desktop encoder. Your browser's JPG encoder differs a little, so sizes on this page vary by a few percent.

Frequently asked questions

Is AVIF to JPG conversion free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of pictures.

Are my AVIF files uploaded?

No. Each picture is decoded and saved by your own browser. The page has no upload step.

Why does the converter say it cannot open my AVIF?

The tool relies on your browser to read AVIF. A browser too old to display AVIF cannot convert it either, so try a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. A damaged or renamed file is also listed as one the tool could not open.

Can I convert many AVIF files at once?

Yes. Add them all and they download together as one ZIP file, each also available alone from the result list.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG instead?

Yes. Change Convert to from JPG to PNG in the list. PNG keeps transparency, and the file is larger.
