How do I invert the colors of an image?
Press Choose a picture, drop a file or paste one, and the inverted version shows at once. Leave the strength at 100 percent, press Invert colors, then Save picture. The saved file has the same size as your picture, and nothing is uploaded because your browser does all the work.
- Press Choose a picture, drop a file, or paste one with Ctrl+V.
- The negative shows right away. Press and hold the eye button to compare with the original.
- Leave Strength at 100 percent for a full negative, or lower it for a partial one.
- Press Invert colors, then open Export and press Save picture.
To invert a whole PDF, such as a dark-mode copy of a document, use Invert PDF Colors.
What does inverting an image do to each color?
Inverting replaces each red, green and blue value with 255 minus that value. Black becomes white, white becomes black, and every color turns into its opposite on the color wheel: red into cyan, green into magenta, blue into yellow. Mid grays stay close to where they were.
| Color | Before (R, G, B) | After (R, G, B) |
|---|---|---|
| Red | 255, 0, 0 | 0, 255, 255 |
| Green | 0, 255, 0 | 255, 0, 255 |
| Blue | 0, 0, 255 | 255, 255, 0 |
| White | 255, 255, 255 | 0, 0, 0 |
| Mid gray | 128, 128, 128 | 127, 127, 127 |
| Skin tone | 224, 172, 140 | 31, 83, 115 |
A mid gray of 128 inverts to 127, one level away, which is why gray areas look almost unchanged while everything else flips.
Can I invert a scanned film negative into a photo?
Partly. Inverting a scan of a black and white negative gives a usable positive. A color negative has an orange tint from the film base, so a plain invert leaves a blue cast. Invert first, then correct with the Warmth and Tint sliders in Adjust and set the tones with Contrast.
Open Adjust after applying the inversion, move Warmth toward the positive side to reduce the blue cast, and use Shadows and Highlights to recover detail. The Wikipedia article on photographic negatives explains the film base color. To read the exact code of a color before and after the inversion, open Color Picker from Image.
Can I invert an image only partway?
Yes. The Strength slider blends the negative with the original. At 20 percent a gray of 100 becomes 111. At 50 percent every pixel becomes 127.5, a flat gray, because the negative and the original cancel out. A color of 200, 40, 90 at 50 percent becomes 128, 128, 128.
Use low strengths for a faded or ghostly look and 100 for a true negative. Above 50 percent the picture inverts, with less contrast the closer you are to 50.
Does inverting twice restore the original?
Yes, exactly. 255 minus (255 minus a value) is the value again, so two full inversions give back every pixel, with no rounding loss. Saving a JPG in between does change pixels slightly, so keep the editor open and undo, or save the inversion as PNG to stay lossless.
Limits
- One picture at a time. Open the next picture after you save.
- Very large photos are held to 8,192 pixels on the longest side and 16 megapixels, the size a phone browser can draw.
- Camera details such as GPS location and camera model are not copied into the saved file.
- Animated GIFs open as their first frame.
Frequently asked questions
Is the image inverter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you invert.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Your browser opens the image, inverts it and saves the new file. The page has no upload step.
Does inverting keep transparency?
Yes. Only the color channels change. A PNG or WebP keeps its see-through areas as they were.
Can I invert a screenshot to get a dark version?
Yes, but the colors flip as well, so blue links turn orange. Inverting a page of black text on white gives white text on black.
