How do I add a filter to a photo?
Press Choose a picture and thumbnails of all eleven looks appear on your own photo. Tap one to preview it at full screen size, drag Intensity to taste, then press Apply look and Save picture. The saved file keeps the photo's full size, and nothing is uploaded.
- Press Choose a picture, drop a file, or paste one with Ctrl+V.
- Tap a look in the Filters panel. The thumbnails show each look on your photo.
- Drag Intensity to blend the look with the original. Double-tap the slider to reset it to 100 percent.
- Press Apply look, then open Export and press Save picture.
What do the photo filters change?
Each look sets a few Adjust sliders: Warm and Golden shift color temperature, Vivid and Punchy add saturation and contrast, Fade and Matte lift the blacks, Noir and High contrast B&W remove color, Soft and Bright lighten. Nothing is hidden: open Adjust after applying to see the effect in sliders.
| Look | Result (R, G, B) | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Warm | 147, 119, 93 | Warmer, more color |
| Cool | 136, 120, 103 | Cooler, more color |
| Fade | 143, 131, 119 | Less color, less contrast, lifted blacks, brighter |
| Vivid | 151, 117, 84 | More color |
| Matte | 142, 128, 113 | Less color, less contrast, lifted blacks, calmer highlights |
| Noir | 121, 121, 121 | No color, more contrast, darker corners |
| High contrast B&W | 113, 113, 113 | No color, more contrast |
| Soft | 141, 126, 110 | Less color, less contrast, brighter, opened shadows, calmer highlights |
| Bright | 170, 145, 119 | Brighter, opened shadows |
| Punchy | 146, 117, 89 | More color, more contrast, opened shadows, calmer highlights |
| Golden | 156, 126, 98 | Warmer, more color, brighter, darker corners |
How do I make a photo filter weaker?
Drag Intensity below 100 percent. It scales every slider of the look toward zero, so 50 percent is half the effect and 0 percent changes nothing. On the sample tone 140, 120, 100, Noir gives 140, 120, 100 at 0, 132, 120, 108 at 50 and 121, 121, 121 at 100 percent.
Shape settings, such as where a vignette begins, stay where they are; only strengths scale. Apply a weaker look twice if you want to build up an effect in two steps.
Can I change a filter after I apply it?
You can undo it or build on it. Applying a look is one undo step, so Ctrl+Z removes it and you can pick another. To fine-tune, apply the look, open Adjust and move the sliders, which stack on top as a second step. The original file never changes.
For plain brightening without a look, open Photo Editor and use the Exposure and Brightness sliders in Adjust. Black and white, sepia and invert have their own pages: Black and White Photo, Sepia Filter and Invert Image. To read the exact code of a color in the finished look, use Color Picker from Image. To post one look across a grid of pictures, apply it first and then cut the result with Image Splitter.
Do photo filters reduce picture quality?
Filters recolor pixels and keep the pixel size, so no resolution is lost. Saving as JPG recompresses the picture, which can soften fine detail slightly; the default quality of 90 keeps most of it. Save as PNG when you need a lossless file, or WebP for a smaller one.
The preview works on a screen-size copy for speed. The saved file is rendered again from your original at full size, in a background worker, so the final picture is as sharp as the source.
Limits
- One picture at a time. Open the next picture after you save.
- Very large photos are held to 8,192 pixels on the longest side and 16 megapixels, the size a phone browser can draw.
- Camera details such as GPS location and camera model are not copied into the saved file.
- Animated GIFs open as their first frame.
Frequently asked questions
Are the photo filters free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you filter.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Your browser opens the photo, applies the look and saves the new file. The page has no upload step.
Can I use two filters on one photo?
Yes. Apply the first look, then pick another. Each is one undo step, and they stack in the order you applied them.
Can I add my own filter?
You can build one with Adjust: set the sliders, apply, and note the values. Saved custom looks are not available yet.
