How do I convert JPG to PNG?
Press Choose JPG pictures, or drop or paste files onto the page, and check that Convert to reads PNG. Press Convert to PNG, then Download. One picture downloads as a single file, and several download together as a ZIP. The conversion happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
- Press Choose JPG pictures, drop files on the page, or paste a copied picture with Ctrl+V.
- Leave Convert to on PNG. Optional: scale the pictures by percent or longest side to make the PNG smaller.
- Press Convert to PNG. The result list shows each file before and after.
- Press Download. Several pictures arrive as one ZIP.
The tool reads each file by its first bytes, so a JPG named photo.jfif or photo.jpeg opens, and a PNG renamed to .jpg still works. Camera orientation is applied, so a photo shot sideways comes out upright. To convert a different format, use the Image Converter.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. A JPG has already thrown away fine detail, and PNG cannot bring it back. Converting stores the JPG's pixels exactly, so the picture looks the same. In our test the PNG made from a quality 90 JPG differed from the original photo by 2.9 levels, the same as the JPG itself.
| JPG quality | JPG size | PNG made from it | Growth | Error of the PNG | PNG equals the JPG's pixels |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 95 | 556 KB | 2.4 MB | 4.3 times | 2.02 | Yes, every pixel |
| 90 | 417 KB | 2.4 MB | 5.8 times | 2.9 | Yes, every pixel |
| 75 | 263 KB | 2.3 MB | 9.1 times | 4.82 | Yes, every pixel |
| 50 | 176 KB | 2.3 MB | 13.2 times | 6.72 | Yes, every pixel |
The error column is the point of the table. It changes only with the JPG's quality, never with the conversion, because the PNG copies whatever the JPG decodes to. If a picture looks blocky or smudged as a JPG, it looks the same as a PNG. To get a cleaner result, go back to the original file the JPG was made from.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
JPG discards detail the eye barely notices, which shrinks photos a great deal. PNG stores every pixel with no loss, so a photo costs far more space. The 1280 x 854 test photo grew 4.3 times at JPG quality 95 and 13.2 times at quality 50, because lower-quality JPGs start smaller.
A lower-quality JPG turns into a larger multiple, but the PNG stays near 2.3 MB to 2.4 MB either way, since PNG size depends on the pixel content and not on how small the JPG was. That is about 2.2 MB of PNG per megapixel for a photo like this one, so a 12 megapixel phone picture would land near 26 MB. If the PNG is too large to upload, scale the picture down first (the Size option), or keep the JPG.
Flat graphics behave differently. Our generated bar chart with flat colors was 37 KB as a clean PNG and 34 KB as a quality 90 JPG, yet the PNG made from that JPG is 59 KB. JPG compression leaves faint noise around hard edges, and the PNG has to record all of it: the chart held 307 distinct colors before, and 4,360 after the trip through JPG. Convert a chart or logo from its original, not from a JPG copy, when you can.
Can I get a transparent background when I convert JPG to PNG?
Not from the conversion alone. A JPG stores a solid color behind every pixel, so the white or colored background becomes part of the PNG. A transparent PNG needs the background removed in an editor afterward. The PNG format can hold transparency, so the result is ready for that step.
For a signature or a handwritten note photographed on paper, the Signature Generator removes the paper and saves a transparent PNG directly. For a logo, ask whoever made it for the original PNG or SVG file, which usually has the transparency intact. To go the other direction and fill clear areas with a solid color, see PNG to JPG.
When is it worth converting JPG to PNG?
Convert when a program, printer or upload form accepts only PNG, when you will edit the picture and save it repeatedly, or when you want a safe working copy before adding transparency. Do not convert plain photos to save space or gain quality. The JPG is smaller and looks identical.
The repeated-edit case is real. Re-saving a JPG adds new error every time, because each save compresses again. We saved the test photo as a quality 90 JPG, converted it to PNG and saved a JPG again: the error against the original moved from 2.9 to 3.02. One round trip costs little, but a PNG working copy stops the error from stacking while you edit. Save the final version as JPG once, at the end.
For everything else, the Image Converter handles the other directions, and WebP to PNG and GIF to PNG cover two other formats that convert to PNG. Need the pictures in a document? JPG to PDF and PNG to PDF skip the conversion step.
Limits
- Size: PNG files from photos are several times the JPG. Large batches can reach hundreds of megabytes, so a phone handles about 120 MB of input at once and a computer about 600 MB.
- Transparency: none is added. The PNG has the JPG's solid background.
- Camera details: location and other EXIF data are not copied. The camera turn is applied to the pixels first.
- Color profiles: the browser converts to its standard sRGB screen colors, so a picture with a wide-gamut profile may shift slightly.
- Very large pictures: anything over about 16 megapixels is scaled down to fit what phone browsers can draw. The longest side stops at 8,192 pixels.
- Test figures: sizes above come from a desktop encoder. Your browser's PNG encoder compresses a little differently, so file sizes on this page vary by a few percent.
Frequently asked questions
Is JPG to PNG conversion free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of pictures.
Are my pictures uploaded?
No. Each picture is opened, redrawn and saved on your own device. The page has no upload step.
Is there a quality slider for PNG?
No. PNG is lossless, so the converter has nothing to trade away. Pick Convert to JPG, WebP or AVIF in the list if you want a quality slider.
Can I convert many JPG files at once?
Yes. Add them all and they download together as one ZIP file, each also available alone from the result list.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Choose pictures from your photo library or files. A phone handles about 120 MB at once, so send very large batches in parts.
