How do I convert WebP to PNG?
Press Choose WebP pictures, or drop or paste files onto the page, and check that Convert to reads PNG. Press Convert to PNG, then Download. Transparent areas stay transparent. One picture downloads as a single file, and several download together as a ZIP. The conversion happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
- Press Choose WebP pictures, drop files on the page, or paste a copied picture with Ctrl+V.
- Leave Convert to on PNG. Optional: scale the pictures by percent or longest side to make the PNG smaller.
- Press Convert to PNG, then Download. The result list shows each file before and after.
The page reads each file by its first bytes, so a WebP saved with a .jpg or .png extension is identified correctly and converts. If you do not need transparency and want a smaller file, use WebP to JPG. For other formats, use the Image Converter.
Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. WebP can store an alpha channel in both its lossy and lossless modes, and PNG has an alpha channel too, so every clear and half-clear pixel carries over unchanged. The result is a PNG you can place on any colored page, slide or design, with soft edges and shadows intact.
We measured it on a 400 x 400 logo (160,000 pixels) with a soft shadow, saved as a quality 80 WebP. The WebP held 69,738 clear, 44,757 solid and 45,505 partly see-through pixels, and the PNG held 69,738, 44,757 and 45,505: identical in every pixel. Google's WebP overview notes that transparency works in lossy and lossless WebP alike. If you convert to JPG instead, that transparency is replaced with a solid color.
Is converting WebP to PNG lossless?
The conversion adds no loss: our PNG decoded to exactly the same pixels as the WebP at every quality we tried. It also cannot repair a lossy WebP, because the compression damage is already in those pixels. A lossless WebP converts to a PNG that matched the original photo exactly in our test.
| WebP setting | WebP size | PNG size | PNG vs WebP | WebP error | PNG equals the WebP's pixels |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lossy, quality 90 | 371 KB | 2.2 MB | 6.2 times | 2.2 | Yes, every pixel |
| Lossy, quality 75 | 226 KB | 2.2 MB | 10 times | 3.91 | Yes, every pixel |
| Lossy, quality 50 | 175 KB | 2.2 MB | 12.7 times | 4.98 | Yes, every pixel |
| Lossless | 1.2 MB | 2.3 MB | 1.9 times | 0 | Yes, and equal to the original |
The error column rises as the WebP quality falls, and the PNG repeats it exactly. If a WebP looks smudged, the PNG looks the same. Pictures that matter should be exported again from the original source, not recovered from a lossy WebP. The JPG to PNG page shows the same rule for JPG files.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?
PNG stores every pixel with no loss, and WebP, particularly in its lossy mode, discards detail the eye barely notices. The test photo grew from 371 KB as a quality 90 WebP to 2.2 MB as PNG, and from 175 KB to 2.2 MB at quality 50. The PNG size barely depends on the WebP quality.
Lossless WebP is the closest match. Google reports that lossless WebP images are 26 percent smaller than PNG; our photo measured 46 percent smaller (1.2 MB against 2.3 MB), and our flat chart 2.9 KB against 30 KB. Your browser's PNG encoder compresses a little differently from the one we measured, so expect a few percent of difference. To make the PNG smaller, use the Size option to cut the pixel dimensions, since file size follows the pixel count. A logo with transparency went from 10 KB as WebP to 41 KB as PNG.
Should I convert WebP to PNG or to JPG?
Choose PNG when the picture has a transparent background or flat colors and sharp text, such as a logo, sticker, icon or screenshot, or when you will edit it further. Choose JPG for photographs that need the smallest file and have no transparency. The WebP to JPG page covers that route in detail.
The two outputs differ most on file size. Our photo was 2.2 MB as PNG against 406 KB as a quality 90 JPG, which WebP to JPG measures in full. The newer AVIF format has its own page, AVIF to JPG. For documents, WebP to PDF and PNG to PDF place the pictures on pages directly. If the picture arrived by right-click, the reason it is WebP at all is explained under why a download is saved as WebP.
Limits
- Browser support: the file must be one your browser can display. MDN lists WebP as supported in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari. An unreadable file is left out with a message.
- Animation: an animated WebP converts as its first frame. Animated PNG output is not part of this tool.
- Large files: PNG files are several times the WebP. A phone handles about 120 MB of input at once and a computer about 600 MB.
- Color profiles: the browser converts to its standard sRGB screen colors, so a WebP with a wide-gamut profile may shift slightly.
- Camera details: metadata such as location is not copied.
- Very large pictures: anything over about 16 megapixels is scaled down to fit what phone browsers can draw. The longest side stops at 8,192 pixels.
Frequently asked questions
Is WebP to PNG conversion free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of pictures.
Are my WebP files uploaded?
No. Each picture is decoded and saved by your own browser. The page has no upload step.
Is there a quality setting for PNG?
No. PNG is lossless, so there is nothing to trade away. The file keeps every pixel of the WebP, which makes it larger.
Can I convert many WebP files at once?
Yes. Add them all and they download together as one ZIP file, each also available alone from the result list.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Choose WebP files from your photo library or files. PNG files are large, so a phone handles about 120 MB of input at once and big batches should go in parts.
