Remove Background from a Photo, Right on Your Device

Open a picture and a small AI model finds the subject in a few seconds. Touch up the edge with a brush, then save a transparent PNG or pick a new background. The model runs in your browser, so the picture stays on your device.

How do I remove the background from a picture?

Choose a picture and the Background tool starts at once. The first time, it downloads the AI model, then it marks the subject and shows it over a checkered see-through backdrop. Fix the edge with Restore or Erase, press Apply, then Save picture. The file saves as a PNG with transparency.

  1. Press Choose a picture, drop a file, paste with Ctrl+V, or press Take a photo on a phone.
  2. Pick Object or product or Person or portrait. The model runs on your device.
  3. Zoom in on the edge. Use Restore to bring back a part, Erase to remove leftover background.
  4. Press Apply, then Save picture. PNG and WebP keep the see-through background.

To trim the empty space around the subject afterward, use Crop Image. For a soft background instead of none, see Blur Background.

How do I make a picture background transparent?

Keep Transparent selected under New background and press Apply. The editor then saves a PNG, because JPG cannot store see-through pixels. Each pixel keeps its color and gets an opacity from 0 to 255 taken from the mask, so soft edges such as hair blend into whatever you place the picture on later.

This is alpha compositing: the saved opacity says how much of each pixel covers what sits behind it. If you open the PNG in a program that shows white behind it, the background is still see-through; drop it onto a colored page to check. For a picture you already have as a JPG, JPG to PNG changes the format, but only removing the background makes it see-through.

How accurate is the AI cutout?

On our generated test picture, a shaded figure on a plain backdrop, the object model matched the true outline by 99.6% (intersection over union) and by 100.0% after edge snapping. Real photos with busy backgrounds, glass, smoke or fine hair score lower, so check the edge before you save.

Measured on 2026-10-18, 1200x900 generated test picture (subject on a plain backdrop), a 2018 laptop (Intel Core i5-8350U), WebAssembly on one thread
ModelModel inputTime per pictureEdge snappingMatch with true shape
U-2-Net (small, u2netp)320 x 3203.6 s0.2 s per megapixel99.6% raw, 100.0% snapped
MODNet (8-bit)672 x 5122.7 s0.2 s per megapixel76.9% raw, 77.0% snapped

The portrait model is trained on photos of real people, so our drawn figure is a poor test for it; it scored lower here, and we keep it for photos of people. The model sees a small copy of the picture (320 x 320 pixels for objects), then a guided filter fits the mask to the full-size edges. That second step is our own code and runs in 0.2 seconds per megapixel.

Is it safe to remove a background here?

The AI model downloads once to your browser and runs on your device. Your picture never leaves it: there is no upload and no account. The files come from this site only, the AI engine (11.8 MB) and one model of up to 6.3 MB, and after that the tool works offline.

How do I fix parts the AI missed?

Pick Restore and paint over a part of the subject that went missing, or pick Erase and paint over background that stayed. Strokes show in green and red, and the preview updates as you paint. Undo stroke takes back the last one. Cutoff and Edge softness move the whole edge in or out.

Snap edge to picture controls how strongly the mask follows edges in the picture itself. Turn it down for a smooth, rounded outline; turn it up for hair and leaves. If the AI cannot run on your device, press Mark by hand and erase the background with the brush alone.

Can I put a new background or color behind the subject?

Yes. Under New background, pick Color and choose any color, Blur to soften the original background, or Picture to place another photo behind the subject. The backdrop picture is scaled to cover the whole frame and centered. Press Apply to keep it, then save as JPG, PNG or WebP.

A white or light gray backdrop suits product photos for shops and marketplaces. To size the result for a listing, use Resize Image afterward.

Limits

  • One picture at a time. Open the next picture after you save.
  • Very large photos are held to 8,192 pixels on the longest side and 16 megapixels, the size a phone browser can draw.
  • Camera details such as GPS location and camera model are not copied into the saved file.
  • Animated GIFs open as their first frame.

Frequently asked questions

Is the background remover free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many pictures you process. The model runs on your own device, so there is nothing for us to charge for.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in a current phone browser. The first use downloads about 16.2 MB, so a Wi-Fi connection helps. The model sees a copy no larger than 1,024 pixels, which keeps memory use low.

Why is the saved file a PNG?

JPG has no see-through pixels, so the editor switches to PNG when the background is transparent. Pick WebP in Export for a smaller file that also keeps transparency.

Does it work offline?

After the first use, yes. The engine and the model stay in your browser cache, so the tool loads them without a connection until the browser clears its cache.
